as an attendant in more weddings than i have fingers, i have lots of experience in bridemaid’s dresses. i gave some away immediately, i repurposed some by shortening the length and let some hang in the back of the closet for my lifestyle to change enough that i would have plenty of formals, cocktail evenings and other occasions to “BE ABLE TO WEAR IT AGAIN!” (that hasn’t happened yet, btw).

so…for our wedding i picked a color, sent my bffs links to a couple dress options (if they wanted those) and turned them loose.  everyone was able to pick a dress they liked/already owned/that was flattering on them in the color (range) i was going for. there were just four attendants on my side of the aisle and the dresses were similar enough. and i know at least one of them actually wore it again – on multiple occasions. win!

that’s not for everyone, surely, but would you do it?

what about in “27 dresses” style asking your bridesmaids to wear a dress from a wedding they were in formerly…that would take some panache and probably a little coordinating to pull off successfully, but could be cool!  do you know anyone that’s done that? i wanna see a picture!

if you’re more into things matching (which i also love), there are lots of options there as well. boutiques large and small. two options i love to keep up with are jcrew and ruche (both of those links go to the bridesmaid collections, fyi).

so…here’s the crazy idea: depending on how far along you are in planning the answer to the question in the title may be…”well, yeah, of course!” if you aren’t to that point yet, consider this: rental bridesmaids dresses! at first, that may sound weird, but consider this: it’s not weird for guys to rent a tux, you know?

so, full disclosure, i read about this on green wedding shoes (another amazing resource for brides-to-be, if you don’t know it, check it out). and as to not to totally rip them off, i’ll just hit the highlights i love most about the company little borrowed dress.

*made locally in the garmet district of NYC
*you CAN buy it if you love it and
*they ship a FREE extra size with EVERY order – that’s standard!
*the rental prices are super reasonable, too! like, starting at $50 reasonable!

Just seems like an incredibly sensible and practical way to do things, all while being pretty. form and function…does it get any better!?

this is by no means a totally comprehensive list of places to get bridesmaids’ dresses.  and no one paid me to write this, it’s just some thoughts.

i’d love to hear your experience and what you’re doing for your big day. traditional matching? not so much?

hugs,

mel

hi, friends! it’s time for a little nc mountain engagement shoot.

meet danielle and ben. these two go waaay back. they met when they worked together at a music shop years ago. and, well, facebook did it again and reunited these friends. the rest is history – or it will be this spring!

they are getting married in a couple months in chapel hill (so excited!), but danielle wanted to revisit her old ‘hood. she used to work for the daily courier newspaper in western nc. we’re always up for a trip to the western part of the old north state, so we met up at chimney rock state park. and despite the look of some of these, we did not climb any mountains (but we don’t mind doing that either!)

what I haven’t told you is that dani and i (mel) go way back, too. we studied photojournalism together at RCC (hi, bill!). it’s always fun/intimidating to shoot another photographer and she was as lovely in front of the camera as she is talented behind the camera (love will do that, you know) ;)

Thank you two for choosing us to be a part of your wedding day. can’t wait for may! xo, m&g

hi friends! we’re trying something new over here…the first of lots of big changes…to find out more about this new feature click here.

today I wanna talk about postage stamps. the inspiration for this post came from Style Me Pretty here (that site is so neat – if you don’t know it and you’re planning a wedding – check it out). in our planning we never thought about this, but if you’re going with themed postage, buy enough stamps for ALL your correspondence. save-the-dates. rehearsal dinner invites. rsvp cards. even thank yous. (postcards from the honeymoon? …maybe not).  many stamps from the USPS are limited editions and only available for a certain amount of time.

alternatively, you could use a site like zazzle.com and have your designer customize something totally unique to your event. Here are a few of my favorites from their wedding postage collection:

nc wedding photography - postage stamps

if you found a stamp you love, you could even work with a designer to incorporate the stamp into part if the outer/RSVP envelope printing design. sure, it’s not for everyone, but for the right event, it could create a really charming touch to the stationery suite!

also, this may be common knowledge for many folks (haven’t brushed up on my USPS rules) but there are restrictions for the size and shape of first class mail. Check with your designer or better yet, the post office for the rules – you may need extra postage.

well, thanks for reading! let us know what you think! will you/did you use special stamps? do you wish you would’ve? any other tips or advice?

hugs,
mel
